Will money from an insurance settlement affect a spouse's SSI Benefits?
Posted by MarkAug 8
Hi All,
I was visiting with a neighbor that was in a really bad car accident. She is worried that her husband’s SSI benefits will be affected when she receives money from the insurance settlement. Her husband had brain cancer and lost his vision ~20 years ago. He had a relapse a couple years ago. What I understand is that her husband sees the doctor at least once a month, and they can’t afford for him to lose his health care benefits. Has anyone here been in a situation like this? What did you do? Who would they have to talk to, or where can they find answers. Thanks so much.

Unfortunately with SSI, you are only allowed to have a maximum of $2000 in total assetts. You will become ineglible, but there can be exceptions to this rule. She needs to talk to the SSA or check their web site, http://www.ssa.gov
NO!
It can. See attorney that specializes in social security. There are some good SSI attorneys on internet, do search.
