Yes. If you had an attorney, he will contact Social Security and negotiate a settlement for a return of the money you had received. If you did not have an attorney, you will have to contact them yourself to negotiate a return of the funds they paid to you.
It depends on why someone was drawing from SS in the first place.
Many times people apply for SSI after they are injured in an accident if the accident disables them to the point of not being able to work and earn an income, however, the process can take YEARS to accomplis….usually well after any personal injury settlement.
If you are collecting SSI after retirement, then no. If you receive SSI for something other than the personal injury that you received the settlement for, or if there are provisions that make the SSI temporary, then you probably have to at least claim it and let them make the necessary adjustments.
A call to your local Social Security Office will clear up the matter.
